I was excited to watch this presentation, but…This presentation was old 9yrs ago. Extremely dated info. ‘The corner office is the symbol of our father’s generation’ - my grandmother was kicking down ceilings and redesigning the “office”, this guy’s sustainability ideology was 15yrs old 10 yrs ago! Oy. This is some male-centric culturally-insensitive short-sighted bs.

Interesting that I've been saying for about a year that Detroit could be the Paris of the Midwest, and this guy already saw it five years ago. Well, a lot more development has happened since then and it's is full speed ahead. My only complaint is the cheap siding compared to actual Paris. Can't we find a style for Detroit other than just boxy plaid for the new missing middle exteriors?

I think it is poorly named or misleading? Vancouver killed itself ,starting early 90’s and the hatchet job achieved by , at the latest, 2003. Why most of us who were actually born in the city centre, and grew up in the city centre , left. It’s like visiting a box budget strip mall paved over what was **absolutely ** brag worthy ,gold. The city was looted and destroyed by toady vulgarity , nouveau riche tackiness, degeneracy cloaked as regeneration for crime syndicates and foreign laundromat brokers. When a city destroys its arts, it’s artists, it’s city centre affordable housing , and accelerates in extremis very good chances of homelessness to anyone in 90% of all social strata’s who due to no fault of their own suffer a serious health blip, a tragedy, job loss or mental health crisis, it’s the streets you go for a warm cuppa Fentanyl. The creative small scale important social spaces have been demolished, iconic independent venues and nightlife decimated, beautiful theatres torn down, architectural landmarks blown up for the most boring shite ever accomplished….no wonder Vancouver is seen as a place of utter absolute arrogant toxic positivity cultish yogic twattery. It’s really embarrassing to be from there now. Arrogant civic sociopathy has been mainstreamed to most residents. Not one thing has been done whatsoever to house vulnerability, restore deep pockets of affordability and security for all in urban areas, increase benefits in line with inflation. Inflation must include housing. It doesn’t. That’s a fake manipulative metric. The system got rigged by cartels and foreign tax dodgers who had zero interest in integrating into a once beautiful, multicultural , diverse city full of arts , independents, character, charm, humility and talent. You know a city has reached peak stupid when two doctors with student loans cannot get a mortgage for a modest little house near their workplace. Near their workplace. Where they are on call. To save the twats who fed their vampiric cravings on endless real estate gorging and displacement. There is not a chance in hell a person graduating from UBC with average student debt, coming from a working class background and no parental money could hope to find housing ever in the city they were born and raised in, it’s immediate displacement or extreme housing overcrowding. There is no affordable childcare, many don’t have built in family ATMs , or willing grandparents to take on childcare , and live in overcrowded housing. As that is all there is. When the city was still really lovely, around ‘1993, displacement was never considered a thing on peoples minds that would ever happen. The last best development was False Creek and Granville Island. It was a mixed public housing , coops and some private housing. It housed everyone of all social strata’s. It created a vibrant beautiful collective community full of success, since then, the active dismantling of the beacons of what made Vancouver great, affordability and diversity, thriving independent businesses, restaurants, middle class meritocratic culture, was replaced by a doucherist smug oligarchy of twats lifting their legs marking territory over the homeless population which is as bad as third world, but without the benefit of the freedom of creating a shantytown. So it’s really 4th world. How is it you can cruise around very poor Balkan countries with a post war or recent totalitarian legacy like Montenegro and Albania, and see everyone housed? In fairly decent housing. Obviously rural areas may lack major utilities, but so do Canadian reservations when their is no water, only toxic sludge. Walking anywhere outside of Vancouver, where once stood beauty and moral values, decency, and friendly eco minded progressive people, it’s turned into an Oligarchs luxury toilet, or a Nepotistic wet dream for the oligarchic families benefiting from wholesale destruction of Vancouver’s best legacies. The city is also one of the worlds most anti social, least friendly, and brutally boring unless you have 7 figure play money. So sad. So so so sad. No happy clapping for Vancouver. If Vancouver could reinvent itself to be a sustainable city to all, look to Bogotás Mayors, and city planning, between 95-2001. Look at Singapore and how it became one of the richest countries per capita on earth underpinned ,bolstered by a once majority of housing being state provided housing. It was affordable and cheap stable mass housing that grew an economy and thrust folks into rapid middle class wealth. Not demolishing it and creating horrible inhuman tent cities full of trauma, isolation, disregard, addiction. I truly pray this city flushes it’s arrogance and coldness down the toilet and rebuilds back to when it was great for the many, not the tiny few. I’ll never return. Not even if I won 7 figures, it’s beauty has been paved over by awful. Read up Anna Minton and her essays and book on the legacies of BIDS and pseudo “ regeneration “ projects, to privatise the public realm by stealth. It’s scary reading.
